Why placements matter

Real experience. Real confidence. Real direction.

For some young people, being in a real workplace can be the point where things start to click. Placements help build confidence, independence, communication skills and understanding of the world of work.

Placements form part of the wider bespoke programme and support progression towards education, training or employment.

For construction-related placements, GM prepares students for the CSCS test through practice, preparation and mock tests. The CSCS test itself is delivered externally; GM does not issue the card.

How it works

Every placement is reviewed by GM first

Readiness and interests

We talk to the young person and their school about interests and readiness for a placement.

Employer review

GM reviews every employer and opportunity before it is offered, including confirming they hold an Enhanced DBS check.

Matching and preparation

We match the young person to a suitable opportunity and prepare them for what to expect.

Placement and support

The placement runs with ongoing support and check-ins — monitoring may take place daily or weekly, depending on the young person's circumstances — with feedback shared with the school.

Safeguarding on placement

Safeguarding and welfare oversight throughout

GM maintains safeguarding and welfare oversight while young people are attending work placements.

Before a placement begins

GM carries out appropriate employer vetting and compliance checks, including:

  • Appropriate DBS checks
  • Risk assessments
  • Health and safety requirements
  • Appropriate insurance
  • Employer suitability and compliance checks

Relevant employer compliance information is recorded on GM's Single Central Record (SCR) for employers.

During the placement

Work placements are monitored daily, including learner attendance and welfare. GM maintains regular communication with employers and young people so that any concerns can be identified and responded to promptly.

Any safeguarding, attendance or welfare concerns arising during a placement are reported to GM, recorded appropriately and managed through GM's safeguarding procedures.

Placement partners

Help a young person take their next step

Local employers can help young people build confidence, practical skills and experience of working life. Businesses able to offer work experience, tasters or vocational opportunities are invited to contact GM. Every opportunity is reviewed before being offered.
